NIPPLES TO THE WIND SELECTS DALLAS HUB THEATER AS ITS RESIDENT HOME
The sassy two-woman stage comedy Nipples To The Wind is making Dallas its permanent home beginning January 2008! The show's production company has partnered with the Dallas Hub Theater in Historic Deep Ellum to create a home base for what critics have called "a must-see live theatre event."
On national tour for the past year, Nipples To The Wind performed to rave reviews from both theatre critics and sell-out crowds. The show stars actors Janye Anderson and Paula Coco who portray fourteen unforgettable characters. The play was written by Paula Coco, a native Texan who resided on the east coast for the last eighteen years. Her fellow actor, Janye Anderson is a Dallasite. The two formed their own production company, ICI Productions, in order to maintain artistic control over the show from the beginning, and have parlayed that into a wildly successful play supported by enthusiastic audience popularity from coast-to-coast.
When the two decided that they wanted to set the show down into a permanent space for a long-term run, Dallas was their first choice. It offered the perk of already being home for Anderson and some of Coco’s relatives in nearby Fort Worth, but the real attraction was the Dallas Theatre scene itself. While Chicago used to hold bragging rights of being the birthplace for original and innovative theatre (and Austin has certainly developed a reputation for doing the same in the last twenty years), Dallas joined that elite list and in Coco's opinion, surpassed it.
"I find that Dallas is much more than simply big splashy musicals and the tried and true 'classics' of community theatre that some other large cities consider its performing arts scene. There is obviously a place for that here in Dallas, but there is also a swell of support for new plays and playwrights and thinking outside of the box. As we have traveled, I’ve observed other cities attempting to present new theatre with limited offerings due to lack of public support. Not only does Dallas have a plethora of pioneering, modern, progressive theatre, but it is also embraced by the city as a whole," says Coco.
The decision to partner with the Dallas Hub Theater seemed a natural choice. The show was originally developed to be performed in an intimate setting, and while playing 500-plus seat theatres has its rewards, the company wanted to go back to their roots for a home base. The Hub is a 100-seat theatre with an urban/funky/bohemian groove that Coco and Anderson feel fits in perfectly with their show and their audiences.
The Dallas Hub Theater is located at 2809 Canton Street in Deep Ellum and was created by Tim Shane of Chicago just over three years ago. His vision was to create a space that supported local theatre artists in their endeavors for exciting inventive theatre. He is thrilled to welcome this successful new show to The Hub as its permanent home. The Hub also hosts the 4-week Dallas Fringe Festival (March/April) and will continue to provide this annual event. Nipples To The Wind will be on tour during that time and will continue performing occasional weekends at various theatres nationwide. During each hiatus, The Hub will further its mission by making the theater available to ground-breaking and innovative shows.
Deep Ellum, long known for its artistic vibe, has been undergoing major renovations and restorations for several years and ICI Productions is looking forward to supporting the exciting growth of Dallas' latest up-and-coming neighborhood.
