Tip # 11--Establish your rhythm
March 25, 2008

I get up at 6:00 every morning, go grab my Wall Street Journal and New York Times and scan the papers until 6:45, Monday through Friday, every week. I do this because it is something I enjoy and something I promised myself I would do once I sold my previous company. Every day since February 1st 2007, I have (whenever possible) stuck to this routine. I wake up and head to get my papers, almost all in the same breath. At work, you need to do something similar. I suggest you start doing a daily meeting with your leadership team or your staff, Do it every day, do it the same time and make it effective. For example, at my old company we weren't in the business of having meetings for the sake of having meetings. Every morning at 9:09, the leadership team would gather and each department head would give a minute or two on what they were working on that day. If someone was "stuck" on something, this meeting would serve as a place to put that issue on the table. The meeting typically lasted 15 minutes. In a world where most people only move from fire to fire, working on what is urgent, it is essential to schedule time with your companies leaders so they can work on what is important before it becomes urgent.
Daily meetings, if and only if, they have a consistent purpose and agenda will increase your leadership team's effectiveness. Oh by the way, a nice side benefit from these daily meetings is the camaraderie that is built among your leaders.
