Letter From Our Expert, Barbara Walker

My Child is Missing – What Should I Do?

It is every parent’s worst nightmare – suddenly you can’t find your child at home, school, the shopping mall, or on a family outing.  What should you do?

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, over 2,200 children are reported missing every day.  The first 20 minutes of a missing child emergency are absolutely critical to finding your child.  You must act immediately and call the local law enforcement agency; if in a store, mall or other public place contact Security then call the police.  You must be able to quickly provide a photo and details about your child, including name, date of birth, gender, height/weight, eye color, and other identifiers such as clothing, glasses, braces etc.  This info can be promptly entered into the National Crime Information Center’s Missing Person File.  A key tool is an up-to-date quality photo.  The NCMEC suggests keeping the photo and data on a CD which can be quickly downloaded to any computer with Internet access, such as a police car laptop.  This photo and data should be updated every 6 to 12 months as the child grows, and not stored in a public or child ID company database.  Old style child ID cards are cumbersome and will delay the notification process as they must be scanned, digitized and then distributed; these cards are also made from a database that creates privacy risks and potential liability.

Should you be confronted with a missing child emergency, having the knowledge of what to do and having the key tool to immediately distribute your child’s information to law enforcement will maximize your opportunity to find your child quickly and safely.
