The Internet has evolved so much and so fast, that it feels like it was only yesterday when I first saw Bill Gate’s picture on the front page of a newspaper in the early 1980’s.  While I was studying at the American Banking Institute in New York, the instructor showed us something on a big monitor about how Chemical Bank was trying to create an online banking system for their customers.  Magazine covers were talking about how society in the near future will highly rely on plastic cards for key entry, to make payment, for identity and more.  Soon after, in the early 90’s, a company called Amazon was selling books with big savings on the BBS, a message board, an early version of the Internet.  Several years later, I read on the front page of the Wall Street Journal about how Amazon made their success through the Internet.   For me, I saw the Internet from the 80’s to now, went from a simple computer system for personal use to building an empire of businesses with little investment of money and time.   Today, many of our Internet folks went from nothing to becoming millionaires over a short period of time.  Many found their niche and boom! They became very successful. 
Many people made it very successfully on the Internet through selling products, like Amazon and eBay.  Some made it through selling information and ideas.

Fast forward in time.  Today, we hear terms like Web 2.0, social media, social networking, blogs, online community, eHow, YouTube, MySpace, Sphere, podcasting, Internet radio, web T.V., Wikipedia, Facebook, Meetup, Open Source, RSS, Joomla, WordPress, AIBusinessPro, BusinessPRnews, Google Adword, Google Adsense, viral marketing, affiliate marketing, webcast, eBook, Skype, online audio, video,  eBook, landing page, webinar, autoresponder, CJ, LinkShare, Digg, del.icio.us, and the list goes on.  Many people ask me, “What are they? What is the difference? What are they for? Why? Who? What?”

I would sum it all up in one word: how.  How we should use the list above and utilize these available tools.  Many of these tools online are free, to market our businesses, our ideas, our opinions and so forth.  Whatever it is, the internet is there, like the street that we walk on, the road that we drive our cars on.  The Internet is there for us to show off what we have, as business folks, what our products and services have for the targeted consumers, fast and easy.  As long as you do it right, do it ethically, do it with consideration for other people online, you’re presence on the Internet will build over time and your potential customers are simply a click away from you.

For those who want to market their businesses successfully online, on the Internet, you need to keep a few thoughts in mind.  (1), Keep up with the latest and the best tools available online, (2) Know your products and services and what you do, so you can blog it – simply means to write about your expertise online and share them with those who share  your common thoughts, and (3) Build your team, build your community.
